Google Communities in the Classroom
There did not seem to be too many communities about history that were filled out with a lot of content until I stumbled across the Black History in America community on Google Plus. There are many things that are interesting history facts that can be shared in the classroom. For example, Selma Burke was the creator of the portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt which was eventually used as the portrait of him on the U.S. dime. This community is very detailed and has a plethora of information about the African American history in the United States and quite a few things that most people probably don't know about. Another post in the community talked about Jack Johnson who was an African American boxer who became the first black heavyweight champion of the world back in 1911. Posts in this community range from accomplishments made in music and sports to accomplishments in politics and civil rights. Google Plus can be used in the classroom by having students join communities or even make communities themselves and have them post articles and pictures to them so they can learn new things and help share it with other classmates. It provides a nice connection that students can use to share their knowledge with others. Communities like the Black History in America can be used to show students the accomplishments of another minority which has many that students may have never heard of before.
