Teach Like a Pirate
I enjoyed reading Dave Burgess's blog because he is not afraid to tell it like it is. When it seems like everyone is against you, for firing the winning football coach who is a terrible teacher, or not giving a promotion to someone based on who they know or related to, you need to stay strong, because you can make a difference if you reach the right people. He wrote a blog about the book "Escaping the School Leader's Dunk Tank: How to Prevail When Others Want to See You Drown" by Rebecca Coda and Rick Jetter. In this blog he has a great point made by Zig Ziglar, which says that F-E-A-R has two meanings, you can either Forget Everything And Run, or Face Everything And Rise. I think that when someone is faced with hardship it is okay to fear it, but you should face it and not run away from the problems. If you are strong enough to be able to rise above those who try to see you fall, you can be a very successful educator. In another blog post he has a great quote that I like which says "You can offer no finer gift or higher honor to the world than to find out what your 'drum' is and then play it for all it's worth." He is saying that you have to find what you excel at so that you can take your strengths and magnify them to make up for the areas that you lack. If you are exceptionally good at making fun and interactive lesson plans, then put forth more effort into making them so that the students you teach will be able to get something out of your teaching.
